Bear Creek Arsenal vs PSA, Ruger and Smith & Wesson: Which Budget AR-15 Wins in 2026?
HOW WE TEST

Our gear coverage is vetted by a working law enforcement officer — a department armorer and sniper. We buy our own gear, and no brand pays for placement or a ranking. We earn a commission on some links, which never affects a verdict. Prices come from live merchant feeds rather than MSRP sheets, and if we can't confirm a current price, we don't show one. Every guide shows when it was published and last updated. Picks that don't hold up get pulled or downgraded, not quietly left in place.

Bear Creek Arsenal vs. Palmetto State Armory, Ruger, and Smith & Wesson: current prices, warranties, and what each budget AR-15 buyer actually gets for the money in 2026.

TL;DR for Skimmers

  • Cheapest: Bear Creek Arsenal. A complete BC-15 rifle starts around $316 on BCA's site.
  • Closest rival: Palmetto State Armory, with complete AR-15 rifle kits at about $380-$450 and a lifetime warranty.
  • Skip: Anderson Manufacturing. Ruger bought Anderson's assets in 2025 and discontinued the brand, and Anderson warranty service is no longer available.
  • Name-brand tier: Ruger AR-556 (from about $619) and Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport (from about $635) cost roughly twice as much as a BCA, in exchange for brand recognition and dealer support.
  • Our pick: BCA if price is the priority and you will inspect the gun, PSA if you want a similar price with a longer track record at a single big retailer, and Ruger or S&W if you want to buy locally and never think about it again.

Prices were checked in October 2026 on BCA's and PSA's sites and in Guns.com listings (which mix new and used), so treat the Guns.com figures as "from" prices.

BCA prices are from BearCreekArsenal.com on October 30, 2026. PSA prices are rifle-kit listings on PalmettoStateArmory.com. Ruger and S&W prices are lowest-listed prices at Guns.com and include used guns. Anderson is no longer made, so we do not list a price.

Bear Creek Arsenal vs. Palmetto State Armory

PSA is the rival most buyers actually cross-shop. Both sell direct and compete on price. BCA is cheaper on a complete rifle by roughly $60-$130 on current listings, and it offers far more caliber and upper options, including 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, .300 Blackout, .350 Legend, and the BC-8 long-action rifle. PSA is larger, has retail stores, and a well-known lifetime warranty, which matters if you want to hand a rifle across a counter. Many owners mix the two, running a BCA upper on a PSA lower. See our PSA AR-15 guide and best buys at PSA.

Pick BCA if you want the lowest price or an unusual caliber. Pick PSA if you want a store, a larger company, and a similar price.

What Happened to Anderson Manufacturing?

For years, Anderson was the other name in every cheap-AR conversation. That changed in July 2025, when Ruger bought Anderson Manufacturing's assets. Ruger said it would not continue the Anderson brand or its firearms, per American Rifleman, and Pew Pew Tactical reported that warranty service on Anderson guns is no longer available.

Anderson AM-15 rifles still show up new and used, usually for a bit more than a BCA. Without a warranty behind them, they are only worth it at a clear discount, and only if you can inspect the rifle first. If you already own an Anderson lower, it remains a standard mil-spec lower, so a BCA upper is a cheap way to add a caliber.

Bear Creek Arsenal vs. Ruger AR-556

This is the biggest gap. Guns.com listings for the Ruger AR-556 started around $619, nearly double a BC-15 at about $316. In its 2024 review, Gun Digest priced three BCA guns (a rifle, a .22, and a pistol) at about $1,237 and said comparable Ruger guns would cost nearly twice as much. In return, Ruger gives you a major brand, wide dealer availability, and an easier time reselling. If you plan to shoot the rifle and not trade it, BCA's savings are real. If you want to trade later or buy locally, Ruger is the safer path.

Bear Creek Arsenal vs. Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport

The M&P15 Sport II started around $635 and the Sport III around $660 on the listings we checked. Like Ruger, it buys you a household name and widespread dealer availability at about twice BCA's price. Price alone does not make it a better rifle, and we have not run side-by-side tests. What you are paying for is the brand, a dealer network, and an easier return to the store if something is wrong.

Handguns and Rimfires: BCA vs. the Competition

  • Grizzly BC-101 9mm vs. PSA Dagger: both are Glock-pattern 9mms. The Grizzly lists around $310-$330, and the Dagger starts around $300 at PSA, so the Dagger is the cheaper of the two. Read our Grizzly review and Dagger review, or see all the cheapest handguns.
  • BC-201 .22 vs. Ruger 10/22: the BC-201 copies the 10/22 and takes 10/22 magazines. Gun Digest listed it at a $345 MSRP, while the 10/22 was $279.99 at PSA when we checked. Here the Ruger is cheaper, which is the rare case where BCA does not win on price. See our cheapest reliable .22LR rifles.

Bear Creek Arsenal vs. Competitors: FAQ

Is Bear Creek Arsenal better than PSA? It is cheaper on a complete rifle and offers more calibers, while PSA has stores and a longer public track record. Neither wins everywhere.

Is Bear Creek Arsenal better than Ruger? BCA is about half the price. Ruger offers brand recognition, dealer support, and easier resale. Quality comparisons are unproven without side-by-side testing.

Is Anderson still a good budget alternative to Bear Creek Arsenal? Not for a new purchase. Ruger bought Anderson's assets in 2025 and discontinued the brand, and Anderson warranty service is no longer available. A used Anderson is only worth it at a clear discount.

Is Bear Creek Arsenal worth choosing over Ruger for a 7.62x39 AR? If you want 7.62x39 on the cheap, BCA is the more affordable route and has a wide range of uppers. Pew Pew Tactical's 2026 test of a BCA 7.62x39 rifle scored it 3.5/5 overall and 4/5 for value.

Can I put a BCA upper on a PSA or Anderson lower? Yes, if both follow the standard mil-spec AR-15 pattern, and many owners do. Check that the parts fit and function before relying on the combination.

The Bottom Line

BCA wins on rifle price, caliber variety, and upper options, and it loses on dealer support and track record. The one exception is handguns, where the PSA Dagger starts slightly below the Grizzly. PSA is the closest rival on rifles at a slightly higher price. Ruger and Smith & Wesson cost more and give you a name brand you can buy locally. Anderson is no longer a real option for a new rifle. For a range rifle, a spare, or a caliber experiment, BCA's savings are hard to ignore. For a rifle you want to forget about, spend more or buy from a store that will stand behind it.
